Seven power transformers at the Mine Site Village that have been in service for over 15 years were reported to have a problem with oil leaks. The issue was concerning as it could result in the loss of oil and affect the performance of the transformers. Thus, a strategic plan was designed to rectify the issue and ensure the smooth functioning of the power distribution system.
ERM was engaged to rectify the oil leaks associated with the seven power transformers.
Scope
ERM was responsible for the complete execution of the works, including providing all goods and services required for the project. This includes material, labour, supervision, tools, and testing equipment.
The scope of work included disconnecting 11kV and 0.415kV terminations at the transformer and conducting pre-work. Draining the required amount of oil into IBCs to conduct the rectification work. Undertaking work to rectify oil leaks at the LV link box and the oil temperature and level indicator. Inspecting and identifying the cause of oil leaks located, recommending remedial actions. Installing new gaskets if required. Filling transformer backup after filtering the oil and completing oil reclamation to achieve the required water ppm as per IEC 60422. Testing the transformer and providing a detailed report with test results, photographs, and recommendations to deal with any discovered anomalies.
ERM PLAN
ERM planned and executed the work efficiently and effectively, ensuring that the project was completed within the stipulated time frame and budget. ERM’s team of experienced professionals was involved in every stage of the project, from planning to execution and testing. The team used the latest technologies and equipment to ensure that the project was completed to the highest standards.
During the execution of the project, ERM followed all safety procedures and protocols to ensure the safety of its personnel and the environment. While working on the transformers, the team used personal protective equipment, including gloves, helmets, and safety glasses. The team also ensured that all waste and hazardous materials were properly disposed of and that the site was clean and free of debris.
Conclusion
ERM successfully completed the oil leak rectification work by using effective ERM practices, ensuring the safe execution of works for the seven power transformers. The approach ERM took to provide all necessary works and progress reports to the appropriate electrical supervisor regularly was essential for the successful completion of the project resulting in the following outcomes:
- All seven power transformers were rectified, and oil leaks were stopped.
- All tests on the transformers were carried out and passed, ensuring that they were in good working condition.
- The project was completed within the stipulated time frame and budget.
- A detailed report was provided, including test results, photographs, and recommendations to deal with any discovered anomalies.
